Ethics is a Controversial
Ethics is a controversial, and sometimes even self excluding topic. Taking the ethical side is not always pleasant and requires to be biased, when one takes position on the side of the laws and the rules. According to the definition, ethics “... is well-founded standards of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to do, usually in terms of rights, obligations, benefits to society, fairness, or specific virtues. Secondly, ethics refers to the study and development of one's ethical standards.” (Velasquez et al. 2010). Ethics can impose a large problem and a hard decision, if bringing the law and order, and the family together for competition. This happens because for most people the benefit and protection of the interests of the family stands on the first place.
In the case of Luke, who is clearly an honest and ethically conscious person, stands a considerate choice between the law and the family. First, Luke understands the policies of his company and is concerned in breaking them. The situation, which has been presented to Luke, requires him to keep the information safe at any price, as the business of the company stands at stake. Working at an Ethics Department for ABC, I would suggest Luke to act as the company requires him to, and avoid following a path, which might cost him his career. On the other side, giving advice to Owen regarding selling his real estate or not would not technically be breaking any of the company’s policies. Luke did not go himself to tell Owen regarding the following decent of prices on the real estate market. Keeping in mind that Owen was the one, who came up to Luke, sharing his thoughts without giving out the information and the reasons for an opinion, would not be considered illegal, or unethical.
To sum up, of course the ideal scenario would have been, if Luke would not suggest anything to Owen, therefore keeping his face and corporate ethics safe. Nonetheless, a simple suggestion to Owen would not be considered unethical, due to the clause of unshared information, which technically had not been disclosed.
